Concept for a New Cloud Condensation Nucleus (CCN) Spectrometer
نویسندگان
چکیده
The design of a new cloud condensation nucleus (CCN) spectrometer based on modifications to the original design of Fukuta and Saxena (1979a) is presented. The key modifications include introducing a trapezoidal geometry and orienting the chamber vertically. A series of simulations demonstrate the broadening of the effective range of the instrument to include supersaturations lower than those reported for the original instrument, without reducing the maximum resolvable supersaturation. A design criterion is developed to eliminate configurations that would result in secondary flows in the growth chamber resulting from buoyancy effects. Using instrument configurations that satisfy this criterion, the effects of variations in the chamber geometry, the imposed temperature gradient, and the total volumetric flow are evaluated. A new configuration is identified that could produce real-time CCN spectra with an effective range including at least supersaturations between 0.07% and 1.2%.

active as cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) and susceptible to wet deposition. However, an outstanding problem is whether the effects of chemical aging on their CCN activity are preserved when mixed with other organic or inorganic compounds exhibiting greater water-solubility. In this work, the CCN activity of laboratory-generated biomass burning aerosol (BBA) surrogate-particles exposed to OH an...
متن کاملContributions of organic and sulfate components to CCN concentrations in a boreal forest
The ability of atmospheric aerosols to nucleate cloud droplets is dependent on both the particle size and composition. Organic compounds significantly contribute to particle composition; thus, their ability to act as cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) is crucial for understanding cloud droplet formation. While the organic fraction can significantly alter the hygroscopicity of particles, the comple...

A three dimensional model for simulating the effect of enhanced cloud condensation nucleus (CCN) concentrations on stratocumulus clouds is presented. The model is a largeeddy simulation version of the Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (RAMS) with explicit representation of the CCN spectrum and cloud droplet spectrum. Results of two dimensional tests of the model are presented. A new droplet ...

The Aerosol Intensive Operational Period (AIOP) at the Southern Great Plains (SGP) site in May 2003 dedicated some effort towards the measurement of the Cloud Condensation Nucleus concentration (CCN) as a function of super-saturation and in relating CCN concentration to aerosol composition and size distribution. Furthermore, airborne measurement for the cloud droplet concentration was also avai...

Cloud condensation nucleus (CCN) experiments were carried out for malonic acid, succinic acid, oxalacetic acid, DL-malic acid, glutaric acid, DL-glutamic acid monohydrate, and adipic acid, using both water and methanol as atomization solvents, at three operating supersaturations (0.11%, 0.21%, and 0.32%) in the Caltech three-column CCN 5 instrument (CCNC3). Predictions of CCN behavior for five ...
